Blog Post Week 4 - Gospel Ship

I chose to do "Gospel Ship" by The Carter Family because I am enthralled by the discussion of religion and that was the cardinal topic throughout this song. I personally don't believe in a god but I admire people that do. In my opinion it takes quite a bit of intrepidity to believe in a greater being that is ceaselessly surveilling us. Some of my favorite lyrics in this song arise when they sing, "I'm a-going far beyond the sky. I'm gonna shout and sing til the heaven rings when I hid this world goodbye." I loved this line because I like the idea of divine providence and the afterlife that different people choose to believe in. I love the interpretation of the afterlife that these lines portray. The idea of getting on a ship with people that make you happy and absconding to paradise for the rest of eternity is quite the alluring notion. I also love the guitar accompaniment throughout this song. The bouncing beat is so happy, and when paired with the image of flying off to paradise to forget the pain of this world, it brings a smile to my face. I like to imagine the feel of a rising sun on my face as the ship flies away at the conclusion of the song.

  1. I liked the big describing words that you used, haha! I do agree though, it's quite a cool song and I love the way that the idea is portrayed. I also love the guitar in general, so I enjoyed the accompaniment as well. I like how you described the piece, it definitely gives the song justice.

  2. I like your take on this song because having grown up religious this idea of living in a paradise after death is not something new to me but this song reminds me of how great that actually sounds. Like you said the bouncing beat can really bring a smile to your face at these thoughts and images. Great thoughts to a great song.

  3. I agree with what you described in your blog post. I think a lot of people like to believe in some kind of "life after life" because it is more appealing than an empty future. I think living without this hope of a continuation of life, people would be more reckless or morally challenged. I think if there isn't the slightest fear that someone is judging us after we die, to see if we live in harmony or in hell, would make us a little more inclined to be unethical.
