Blog Post Week 6 - "Nature Boy" by Nat King Cole

For this week's blogpost, I decided to do "Nature Boy" by Nat "King" Cole. I chose this song because I have quite the predilection toward the crooning style. The performer of this song, Nat Cole, has the most delicate and placating voice that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. He has a slight vibrato that gives his voice the most dulcet and comforting feel. The word choice of this song also enhanced his performance. Such words like "enchanted" and "wander" gave it an occult and almost numinous vibe that I found entrancing. The orchestral accompaniment also enriched this song as well. The solo flute that plays throughout the song provides an imagery of walking through a brumous woodland. The powerful opening with the French horns was an amazing hook for the audience. I always know exactly what song is play the moment it begins. Another aspect of the accompaniment that I loved was the piano. It is very gentle, almost indiscernible from the rest of the accompaniment at times, but that reserved quality makes it even more beautiful. It typically strikes a low chord, and then dances on the higher keys for a moment. I would absolutely recommend that everyone listen to this song at least once. It's an absolutely ethereal experience.

  1. I find it kind of interesting that people have different reactions to the crooning style. For me I don’t find it as appealing. This song is great and I liked you in depth analysis of this song. I can hear the vibrato that you talked about. Overall just a great performance.

  2. This is probably one of the best blog posts that I’ve seen in a while! I love the way that you describe Nate Cole’s voice. It sounds like you know what you’re talking about! As for the song, it’s a very interesting song, but I love that vibe that it gives.
