Blog Post Week 12 - Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
For this week's blog post, I decided to listen to and write about "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. I absolutely love this song because my cousins and I would always try to play it as we were growing up. My house when I was a kid had a music room and was full of a wide variety of instruments ranging from basses, to drum sets, to guitars, to even accordions. My cousin was super into rock so he would always try to get us to play it in the music room as a family. I usually stuck to playing drums for it, but the base line for this song was the first one that I ever learned. I rarely play base anymore and haven't seems some of my cousins in years, but it was super fun to listen to this song and reminisce about my childhood. It was super nostalgic. I never really listened to the lyrics because I was so busy trying to stay keep tempo on the drum set, but even after listening to the song a couple times, I genuinely have no idea what the lyrics mean. I know they're supposed to be about teenage rebellion, freedom, and sex because it says something about libido but I have no idea what it means honestly.
I also love this song, but I love that you have a history with it and it brings back memories for you with your cousins. I find it interesting that we often get stuck in music that sounds amazing, but we don't intently listen to the lyrics. We sing along to them mindlessly not realizing their true meaning, and the second we look into it we are shocked. We might get a brief idea of the meaning based off of certain words that we are able to pick out, but I think that many people fall subject to this, myself included. Especially in the rock and rap genre. I loved your thoughts and your story!
ReplyDeleteI like how this song is such a personal experience for you. It's cool to see how music can be a connection point and bond builder for any number of people. I also think it's cool how you point out that it's completely possible to listen to a song without getting any of the meaning from the lyrics. There's plenty of songs I enjoy jamming out to and know none of the lyrics, nice analysis.
